Permatex 81773 Rust Treatment, 16 oz — Rust Removal and Paintable Primer

One-step rust treatment that cleans, converts, and primes

Permatex 81773 Rust Treatment is designed to tackle rust across a broad range of metal surfaces. When applied, rust is converted to a durable black polymer film, reducing roughness and leaving a surface ready for painting or additional protection. The result is a cleaner, more consistent base that can accept coatings or primers without a separate rust converter.

Key benefits at a glance

• Easily applied by brush or spray for quick coverage
• Destroys existing rust on many automotive applications and beyond
• Within minutes, rust is replaced by a protective black coating
• Coating serves as a tough primer that your paint can bond to
• Specially formulated to work with body filler and fiberglass for compatible repairs

Where to use

Ideal for treating rust on automotive frames, trucks, trailers, storage tanks, pipes, valves, fences, decks, bulkheads, overhead structures, hatch covers, and agricultural equipment. It can also be employed on equipment like plows, tractors, and snow removal gear. Note: it is not recommended for automotive exterior sheet metal repairs.

How to apply

• Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free of loose rust or contaminants
• Apply in temperatures between 50°F and 90°F (10°C and 32°C) for best results
• Brush or spray a thin, even coat and allow the film to form
• Once dry, you can paint over the coating with compatible paints or primers

What to expect in real-world use

Users often notice a quick visual change as rust diminishes under the black film, followed by a firm, paint-ready surface. The coating is designed to hold up as a base layer, helping to reduce future corrosion when paired with appropriate topcoats.

Notes on limits and care

Impacts and performance can vary by substrate and environmental conditions. The product is not intended for all exterior metal repairs, and you should follow proper surface preparation and topcoat recommendations to achieve the best results.
