Car Won't Start? How to Jump-Start Safely (UK)
You turn the key and nothing happens — or you get a sad click and a dim dashboard. Before you panic, it's worth working out whether you've got a flat battery or a deeper fault, because the fix is very different. Here's how to diagnose it and jump-start safely if the battery is simply dead.
Battery, starter or alternator?
The symptoms tell you a lot:
- Flat battery: dashboard lights are dim or dead, you hear rapid clicking or nothing, and the engine won't turn over. Headlights barely glow.
- Starter motor fault: lights and electrics are fine, but you get a single loud click (or silence) when you turn the key and the engine won't crank.
- Alternator fault: the car starts and runs but the battery keeps going flat, or a battery warning light glows while driving. The alternator charges the battery while you drive, so a failing one leaves you stranded again and again.
If a jump-start gets you going but the car dies again soon after, suspect the charging system. A failing alternator is the usual cause; if the engine won't crank at all despite a healthy battery, the starter motor is the prime suspect.

A modern lithium jump starter pack is the easiest and safest option — no second car needed, and most have built-in reverse-polarity protection. Keep one charged in the boot and you're never stuck.
How to jump-start with a jump pack
- Turn everything off — ignition, lights, heater, radio.
- Connect red (+) clamp to the positive battery terminal.
- Connect black (–) clamp to a clean, unpainted metal earth point on the engine block — not the negative terminal — to avoid sparks near the battery.
- Switch the pack on and wait a moment, then start the car as normal.
- Once running, remove the black clamp first, then the red, and stow the pack.
Jump-starting from another car
The order matters for safety. Park the cars close but not touching, both ignitions off. Connect red to the dead battery's positive, red to the donor's positive, black to the donor's negative, then black to an earth point on the dead car's engine. Start the donor, let it run a minute, then start the flat car. Remove the leads in reverse order. Never let the clamps touch each other while connected.
After the jump
Drive for at least 20–30 minutes to let the alternator recharge the battery — short trips won't do it. If the battery goes flat again overnight, it's either tired and needs replacing, or you have a parasitic drain or charging fault. A battery charger or maintainer is the cheapest way to revive and protect a battery that's been run down, and a smart charger will recondition many batteries that seem beyond saving.
Safety points worth repeating
- Batteries give off flammable hydrogen — no smoking, no sparks near the terminals.
- Wear eye protection; battery acid is nasty.
- Never jump-start a visibly damaged, leaking or frozen battery.
- Check your handbook — some cars have dedicated jump points under a bonnet cover, especially hybrids and EVs.
