Compressor or thermoelectric — what is the difference?

A compressor fridge works like the one in your kitchen and holds a set temperature, even freezing, whatever the weather. A thermoelectric cooler cools to roughly 18°C below the surrounding air, weighs less and costs less, but it is not a freezer.

Will a car fridge flatten my battery?

Compressor fridges draw around 1 A on average once cold, and their battery-protection setting switches them off before the voltage falls too low to start the engine. For several nights without driving, a leisure battery or power station is the answer.

What size do I need?

A 15 to 25 litre fridge suits a couple on a weekend trip; families and van-lifers usually go for 40 litres or more. Check the external dimensions against your boot or bulkhead before ordering.
