Cordless or 12V — which tyre inflator should I choose?

A 12V inflator plugs into the car's accessory socket and never runs out of charge, which suits long jobs such as van or 4x4 tyres. A cordless inflator lives in the boot, needs no cable and is faster to use for a quick top-up; many include a 12V lead as a back-up.

What pressure should my tyres be set to?

Use the figure on the sticker inside the driver's door or fuel flap, or in the handbook, not the maximum printed on the tyre wall. Most cars sit between 30 and 38 PSI; set the target on the inflator and it stops automatically when it gets there.

Can these inflators handle van or SUV tyres?

Yes, but check the rated PSI and flow rate. Higher-flow twin-cylinder units fill large tyres faster and run cooler. Pause between tyres on the smaller pocket models to let the motor cool.
