Tyre repair kits — frequently asked questions

Is a plug repair permanent?

Treat a string plug as a get-you-home repair. In the UK a permanent tyre repair should meet BS AU 159, which means a tyre fitter removes the tyre and fits a combination plug-patch from the inside. Book that in soon after plugging.

Which punctures can be plugged?

Small holes in the central tread, typically up to 6 mm across, from nails and screws. Damage to the shoulder or sidewall, long cuts or a tyre that has been driven flat cannot be safely plugged and needs replacing.

What else do I need alongside the kit?

Pliers to pull the object out, an inflator to bring the tyre back up to pressure, and a torch if it is dark. Many of our kits include a carry case with room for all of them.
