How to Fix a Noisy Serpentine Belt (Squeal & Chirp)
That squeal when you start the car on a cold, damp morning, or the chirp that builds as you rev — it's almost always the serpentine belt (also called the auxiliary or drive belt). This single belt drives your alternator, water pump, power steering and air-con compressor, so it's worth sorting properly. A worn belt or a tired tensioner left too long can fail completely and leave you stranded, so let's diagnose it the right way.
What's making the noise?
There are two classic belt noises, and they mean different things:
- Squeal — a loud screech, usually on start-up or when you put a load on (turning the wheel, switching on the air-con). This is typically slip: a glazed, worn or loose belt, or a weak tensioner not holding tension.
- Chirp — a rhythmic chirp that speeds up with engine RPM. This usually points to misalignment of a pulley or a worn bearing in the tensioner or an idler pulley.
How to diagnose it
- Listen and locate. With the bonnet up and the engine running (mind moving parts, loose clothing and hair), use a length of hose to your ear or a mechanic's stethoscope to pinpoint the source.
- Inspect the belt. Switch the engine off. Look for cracks across the ribs, a shiny glazed surface, fraying edges, or chunks missing from the ribs. More than a few small cracks per rib and it needs replacing.
- Check the tensioner. The automatic tensioner keeps the belt tight. Spin the belt off the longest run and feel its movement — it should move smoothly and spring back firmly. If it's stiff, rattly, doesn't spring back, or the indicator marks are outside the range, the tensioner is worn.
- Check the pulleys. Spin each idler and the tensioner pulley by hand (engine off). They should turn smoothly and quietly. Any grinding, roughness or wobble means a failed bearing.
A handy trick: a tiny amount of belt dressing on a squealing belt will silence it briefly — but if the noise comes back, that confirms the belt or tensioner is genuinely worn and needs replacing, not masking.
Replacing the serpentine belt
What you'll need: a new serpentine belt (match it exactly to your engine), a ratchet or breaker bar to fit the tensioner, and a clear photo or diagram of the belt routing.
- Photograph the routing first. The belt threads around several pulleys in a specific path. There's often a diagram on a sticker under the bonnet — if not, take a clear photo before removal.
- Release the tensioner. Fit your ratchet to the square hole or bolt on the tensioner arm and rotate it to relieve tension. Slip the belt off one pulley, then gently let the tensioner back.
- Remove the old belt and compare it side by side with the new one to confirm length and rib count match.
- Route the new belt following your photo, leaving the tensioner pulley until last.
- Re-tension. Rotate the tensioner again, slip the belt over the final pulley, and release. Double-check the belt sits centred and square on every pulley.
- Test. Start the engine and watch the belt track straight with no noise.
Don't forget the tensioner and pulleys
If your diagnosis pointed to a worn tensioner or a rough idler bearing, replacing the belt alone won't cure the noise — it'll come straight back, and a seized pulley can shred a brand-new belt.
