How to Test & Replace a Car Battery: A UK Guide
A car battery quietly does its job for years, then fails on the coldest, busiest morning of the year. Knowing how to test one and fit a replacement yourself saves the cost of a call-out and gets you moving again fast. Most batteries last around four to six years in the UK climate, and short winter journeys take their toll, so it pays to know the warning signs before you're stranded.

How to test a car battery
The most reliable home test uses a multimeter set to DC volts. With the engine off and the car having sat for an hour, a healthy 12V battery should read around 12.6V. At 12.4V it's roughly 75% charged; below 12.2V it's flat and needs charging. Start the engine and the reading should jump to between 13.7V and 14.7V — that confirms the alternator is charging. If it stays below 13.5V, your charging system, not the battery, may be the problem.
For a deeper check, many garages and parts shops offer a free load test that measures cold cranking amps (CCA) under load — the truest measure of a tired battery. If your battery simply keeps going flat, a smart battery charger or conditioner can recover a healthy one and is well worth keeping in the garage, particularly for cars used infrequently.
Choosing the right replacement: group size and specs
Three numbers matter when buying a battery:
- Size/fitment code — In the UK we often use DIN or the Type number (e.g. 096, 063, 027). This tells you the physical size, terminal position and post type so it fits the tray and your cables reach. Match it to your old battery's code.
- Capacity (Ah) — Amp-hours, how much charge it holds. Match or exceed the original.
- Cold cranking amps (CCA) — The starting power in cold weather. Don't go lower than the original spec.

Replacing the battery step by step
- Prepare. Switch everything off and remove the key. Have your radio code and any memory presets to hand, as power will be lost.
- Disconnect negative first. Loosen and remove the black negative (–) terminal, then the red positive (+). Always negative first to avoid a short.
- Remove the clamp. Undo the bracket holding the battery down and lift the old one out — they're heavy, so mind your back.
- Clean the tray and terminals. Wipe away any corrosion with a wire brush.
- Fit the new battery. Set it in place, refit the clamp, then connect positive first, negative last. Make sure both are tight.
- Battery registration. Many modern cars (especially with stop-start) need the new battery 'registered' to the car's system with a diagnostic tool, or it won't charge correctly. A basic OBD2 scanner with battery-registration support can do this at home.
Once fitted, re-enter your radio code, reset the clock and start the car. A quick multimeter check should now show a healthy charging voltage.
