How much torque do I need to remove wheel nuts?

Car wheel nuts are tightened to roughly 90 to 140 Nm, but corrosion can more than double the effort needed to loosen them. An impact wrench rated at 300 Nm or more handles most cars; vans and 4x4s benefit from 600 Nm or more.

Can I tighten wheel nuts with an impact wrench?

Run them up snug with the wrench, then finish with a torque wrench to the manufacturer's figure. Impact wrenches overshoot easily and over-tightened nuts stretch the studs and warp discs.

Why do I need impact sockets rather than ordinary ones?

Chrome sockets can crack or shatter under an impact wrench. Impact sockets are made from thicker chrome-molybdenum steel and have a black phosphate finish, so they absorb the shock safely.
